  30.       The purpose of the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Oil and Gas 
  31.       Assessment is to develop geologically based hypotheses regarding the 
  32.       potential for additions to oil and gas reserves in priority areas of the 
  33.       United States. The USGS recently completed a map compilation showing 
  34.       historical oil and gas exploration and production in the United States. 
  35.       Maps are available both as a static Portable Document Format (PDF) file, 
  36.       and as an interactive map that is accessible at the USGS website. 
  37.       Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial data can be accessed from the 
  38.       internet map service and metadata services via a web browser and/or 
  39.       imported into ArcGIS (ESRI, 2005). An important aspect of this map product 
  40.       is that its use does not require extensive GIS expertise or highly 
  41.       specialized equipment.

  77.       The descriptive text is in HTML format and the map and legend are in PDF 
  78.       format. Use Internet Explorer or another supported browser, listed below, 
  79.       and Acrobat Reader 7.0 or higher (version 8.1.2 included on this CD) to 
  80.       access and bring up the report. Simply double click the OPEN_FIRST.html 
  81.       file to get started.

  83.       The U.S. Geological Survey Central Energy Resources Team has developed an 
  84.       internet map application as a visual analysis tool and to deliver data to 
  85.       the public. The spatial data that formed the basis of the GIS are also 
  86.       provided online at the USGS National Oil and Gas Assessment web site (NOGA 
  87.       Online: http://energy.cr.usgs.gov/oilgas/noga) and are contained on this 
  88.       CD-ROM in the 'spatial' folder. Several data formats are provided as noted 
  89.       by subfolders (export, shape and geodatabase). The 'doc' subfolder 
  90.       contains metadata documentation (in HTML, XML and text format) that is 
  91.       also incorporated in each shapefile, file geodatabase feature class, and 
  92.       export file in XML format.

  94.       The base cartographic data layers and map services used in the GIS project 
  95.       are from the U.S. Department of the Interior National Atlas web site, 
  96.       www.nationalatlas.gov, the U.S. Geological Survey National Map, 
  97.       http://nmviewogc.cr.usgs.gov/viewer.htm and the Environmental Systems 
  98.       Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) Geography Network, 
  99.       http://www.geographynetwork.com.

  103.       When the CD-ROM is opened, the following appear on the screen:
  104.           acrobat folder - contains installer for Acrobat Reader 8.1.2 
  105.           graphic folder - contains graphic files used in this product 
  106.           spatial folder - contains the GIS data and metadata files 
  107.           text folder - contains the report html pages 
  108.           OPEN_FIRST.htm - Double click this file to get started. This file 
  109.           opens the product and provides navigation to the report, the hardcopy 
  110.           map, the video, the Internet Map Service and metadata services, and 
  111.           the readme file.
